In the last 12 months, boxer Floyd Mayweather has gone from a huge talent known mostly by fight fans, to an international superstar. The good news to this story is, his out-of-this-world talent is now recognized around the globe. The bad news is, his massive ego and free wheeling habits with money are just as visible for all of us to see. Floyd has recently adopted the nickname "Money Mayweather," and Global Grind user Kwame08 posted a YouTube video of Floyd counting over $1 million dollars on his night stand. In case you aren't familiar with Floyd, this isn't an isolated incident, he regularly carries around tens of thousands of dollars and sometimes throws it into the crowds of fans.
I know what some of you are saying, "It's his money, he can do whatever he wants with it, he's just having fun." That's true, I like seeing $5 dollar bills showered across a strippers a** as much as the next man, but what about the potential dangers associated with flashing money? Let's not forget what happened to Sean Taylor, who was killed by intruders looking to steal his possessions (who wouldn't want to burglarize Floyd's home after watching that video?). And there was Dunta Robinson of the Houston Texans who was held at gunpoint and stripped naked in his own home last year. Remember Antoine Walker who suffered a home invasion robbery last year? Rich black athletes are HUGE targets, and all it takes is one night for you to be caught slippin, and it's over.
Global Grind users like Stryker who talk about the memory of Sean Taylor living on serve an important reminder that the game DOES move on without you. I don't want to have to talk about Mayweather in past tense just because he took his flossing a little too far.
Do you think celebrities flaunting their money like this is a good idea? Do you think it significantly increases the chances of them facing violence? -Sportaphile
