Last week, In preparation for his album release, Snoop Dogg did a guest post over on BET’s “Hip Hop Vs. America’s Blog” were he made the controversial statement

“"How many ugly women selling records? None! Only the pretty ones sell records. Beyonce, Mary J, Keyshia Cole, the ugly ones don't sell. I ain’t gon say no names, but they don't sell records. They just be singing their little hearts out, but they don't get no sales, cause they ugly. Now, that's my fault? I can see this on TV now: 'Snoop Dogg called me, ugly'. You beautiful on the inside, baby.”

Although he caught a lot of flack across the web for this entry, you have to admit that Snoop Dogg has a point. He may not have articulated as well as he could have but over the past few years, it has been hard for certain artists to crack into the music industry if they were lacking a certain look. Skip talent, we’ve heard the story from both Cassie and Blu Cantrell (who really can sing) of being discovered out in a mall or club because they were pretty. To Make matters worse, The number of celebrities undergoing the knife is at an all time high giving the perception that natural beauty is no longer accepted in the industry. In a story grinded by The Chef, boob jobs are the most common graduation gift in Italy. Testbet responded "I teach my girls that beauty comes from within! Otherwise, as we age, we will hate ourselves".

Earlier this week, Former Top Model contestant Tocarra was shown having a total meltdown on the show “Celebrity Fit Club”. In the clip she was shown screaming and crying “if you don’t like how the f*ck I look you can kiss my a**” among other things while an uncompassionate Dr. Ian repeatedly tells her to “have some class”. My first reaction to the video was “why do they always show black women in a confrontational manner on these shows” followed by “why would she go on a show focused on losing weight if she was happy with her body”. But again, you have to wonder how many times Tocarra may have been told that she didn’t have the right look or that she was “too fat” to make it as a model. How many times in her life have she been told that she was “too fat” period? Now when I watch that same video, instead of thinking she is insane, I totally get the meltdown and can feel compassion for what she was going through.

Why do black women have to live up to such high standards in the entertainment industry and why are the men exempt from these same standards? -Necole Bitchie

It ain't fair, I tell ya. I TOTALLY felt Tocarra. She's gorgeous - but like you said, how many times have the doors been slammed in her face? It gets frustrating.

And she started off by saying that they only focused on her shortcomings, not all the good stuff she'd done on the show (I haven't watched it so...)

I didn't know Blu Cantrell was discovered in a mall?!?! She can still sing circles around SO many others out there...

in regards to your final question; its not only a black woman problem, its a male/female issue. Not only are men not held to the same standards of beauty as women but thoroughly unattractive men are often portrayed as studs and someone that any woman would desire (see Rick Ross). Our society associates physical beauty with intelligence, good character, honesty, etc. This doesn't even address the size issues. You know something is wrong with an industry when a woman like Tocarra is considered "too fat".

I felt tocarra's pain too.....Its okay for her to love herself the way she is and not want to make any major changes....And Dr.Ian would have gotten punched in the face!!!

These are Miss Momo's comments

"Snoop was right. I don't think it's necessarily "pretty" as much as it it a certain package - YOUNG, LIGHT SKIN, LONG HAIR, CUTE FACE, SIZE 4 OR SMALLER - and if she actually has talent - even better.

I think about Kelly Price and wonder why she is on the chitlin' circuit doing plays? The woman has a BEAUTIFUL voice! Why haven't we heard from her since like, 2000? And I know we say that Kelly was flat and looks better with the boobs. But God's design is a perfect one. I was disappointed in her. What will all the perfection be worth when your health suffers as a result of having unnecessary foreign objects placed in your body??

And Tocorra. Has anyone seen CFC this time around. Ain't NOBODY on the show grossly overweight. Everybody's on there to tone up, loose a couple of pounds, gain muscle, etc. Tocorra did the obstacle course, so it wasn't like she was sitting in the corner saying, "I ain't doing sh!t." She loves herself and she has 3 "professionals" in her face, telling her why that's wrong. I woulda went the efffff off too. They want you to come in there, acting like less of a person, so at the end of it all they can somehow feel responsible for "building you up." *** please!

UGH! I have never written this big of a friggin response! I am riled up."

It's a shame and a disgrace and it all goes back to what was acceptable in the Massa's house and what wasn't.

Black people are still buying into that mess and until we, as a people, are accepting of the whole range of looks, hair, and skin colors that we come in, this is going to ALWAYS be a problem.

TRUE DAT ! ALTHOUGH I'M CUTE & EVERYTHING, I DON'T LIKE HOW THE "AVERAGE" FEMALE'S GET OVERLOOKED. THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE WOMEN WITH THE VOICES (ARETHA, PATTI, GLADYS, STEPHANIE, CHAKA, ETC) GOT THEIR SHINE ON. I WONDERED WHAT HAPPENDED. THESE WOMEN (IN MY OPINION) WERE ALL BEAUTIFUL TO ME (MINUS ARETHA'S NILE RIVER BOOBIES) BUT THINGS WILL ONLY GET WORSE CAUSE TECHNOLOGY IS A MUTHA & ANYBODY CAN GET A DEAL & BECOME FAMOUS NOW.

Testbet responded "I teach my girls that beauty comes from within! Otherwise, as we age, we will hate ourselves".

Wow...that was such a profound statement to me. These people that think that their beauty is solely visible to the eye are doomed to feel ugly when they start sagging or getting gray hair.

Although Snoop is right by industry view and standards our families need to not peddle that mess to the children. I heard this one lady talk about her own daughter like a dog because she had gained some weight, and I was a total stranger. I can only imagine what happens in private.
