Every morning I sit in my living room with my coffee and get my daily dish of Bossip, TMZ, and Perezhilton. But unlike most of peers, I then hit up NYTmes.com, Truthout.org, MoveOn.org, The Nation.com, MotherJones.com, and MichaelMoore.com. I was in shock yesterday to discover 14 articles, from this weekend alone, on gun based deaths. FOURTEEN!!!! Guess what white America, most of it was in your neighborhoods.
GGrinder Kilogramm called 2007 the "Year of Rapper Felony Charges," with everyone from Prodigy, JaRule, T.I, and even Remy Ma slapped with gun possession charges. I call 2008 the "Year of Kids with Guns." First of all, stop making it so accessible to obtain one. I can walk into my local Walmart and buy a gun with no background check required. I may be paranoid, but doesn't it look fishy that the government purposely makes it easy to obtain, but if your black you're prosecuted.
I have a new demographic to fear. Young white kids ages 3-18 who live in the suburbs. This weekend, two 3-year-olds killed themselves playing with guns. A teenage girl in Houston shot a man at a gas station over an argument. A boy in Allen Park kills his mother and father on the porch, and a 7-year-old brought two loaded guns to school on Friday but fell short of an incident when the gun fell out of his pocket and the teacher confiscated it.
All this happening on the weekend that pro-gun activist and NRA head Charlton Heston died. My sentiments go out to his family and friends. With that said, I hope the loose interpretation of the second amendment gets buried with him. -Danielle Abreu
