Boy was Alicia Keys in the hot seat last week when she shared her thoughts on the murders of Tupac and Biggie as well as gangster rap with Blender Magazine. In a story grinded by Street Knowledge, Alicia Keys was quoted as saying that “Gangster rap was a ploy to get black people to kill each other”. She also stated that the feud between Tupac and Biggie were fueled by the media and government “to stop another great black leader from existing.”

Since the interview was published Alicia Keys has been labeled everything from “racist”, to “militant”,  to a conspiracy theorist by members of the press.  Although I do believe Alicia Keys made the statements, I believe they were taken out of context by Blender. Since the interview was not published in Q&A format, the reader of the article could not tell what question was being asked nor how it was asked to get that response from Alicia Keys. I believe that Blender Magazine took specific quotes from Alicia and twisted them in a way that could be misconstrued and cause an overreaction from the public. Unfortunately for Alicia Keys, she was made the victim of a media outlet pimpin’ a celebrity for publicity.

Alicia Keys released a statement earlier this week in which she claims that her statements were misinterpreted by Blender Magazine and the press. She also added “The recent implications about me are too radical and too dramatic a departure from whom I have continually demonstrated myself to be. I work so hard and give so much of myself to bring about positive change to this world, and I only wish those efforts received as much press and attention as the misinterpretations of the Blender article.”

Alicia Keys is currently gearing up the “As I Am” tour with Ne-Yo, and she is believed to be getting hitched in July to long time boyfriend Kerry Brothers. Unfortunately, the Blender article has acquired so much negative attention that it has overshadowed press from the tour as well as news of the engagement.

It is apparent that these comments were taken out of context and people just want to have a new reason to point the finger at a celebrity. Alicia Keys has strived to maintain a positive image and has publicly made a ground breaking statement regarding the state of Hip Hop and race culture in this country. To turn her words around and attack her in this way is uncalled-for. Her team is taking the right approach by pointing attention to the fact that these wild claims do not fit her character because they clearly don't. What's more likely? Alicia Keys made an unfortunate turn against her poise, class and intelligence or a reporter wanted something new to gossip about to gain some publicty?? Come on america, let's think. Alicia Keys isn't going anywhere-- girl, keep ya head up and stay focused.
