HIP-HOP: Is Smelling Genitals Hip-Hop?

The net is talking a lot about Riskay's "Smell Yo D***" song. It's a tune about a woman asking to smell her lover's thingy to tell if he's been sleeping around. The lie detection technique has been around for a very long time but now there's a soundtrack.

The response has been for the most part laughter or offense and the question of whether or not it's "hip-hop" is sure to pop up sooner or later. Of course it's "hip-hop"! Sure it's tasteless and crass in delivery but because it's wack doesn't mean it doesn't have the spirit of hip-hop in it. The song is honest and shows an element of the artist's environment. I actually know women who admit to checking their men's wee wees for the scent of soap or sex. It's as real as checking shirt collars for lipstick.

Ask yourselves this, had the song been called "I'm Gonna Slice Yo D***" would folks still be hyperventilating? I doubt it. Women threaten to chop off men's southern parts like they're salad chefs and it's all good. For whatever reason, destroying one opposed to smelling one seems to be driving people ape dookie.

Let's look at at our favorite alleged pedophile R. Kelly who makes the most vile records imaginable and gets away with it every time. If Kells sang a male version of the song, would the backlash still be the same? Nope, he'd just be eccentric.

Everyone is free to love or hate a song. After all, that's what makes the whole thing interesting. For "Smell Yo D***" to be causing so much commotion it's resonating with somebody and not offending everybody. In a case like this, the only thing that could destroy a d*** smelling song would be irrelevance.
