What ever happened to legendary singers telling newcomers to take notes? With the sad state of the music industry and many labels signing beauty over talent, you’d think hitmakers such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey would come back this year and show us how it’s really done right? Absolutely not! Both singers were caught slippin' this weekend during performances that made headlines.
We all know Mariah Carey can sing, so why was she caught lip syncing during a performance on Good Morning America on Friday. That’s something you’d expect from a Britney Spears or a Cassie, but Mariah?? In a video grinded by me during the performance, the “Touch My Body” vocals started playing before Mariah started singing, revealing that she was not singing live. To add insult to injury, later in the song her background dancer comes in and sings Mariah’s part and in an attempt to clean up the act, Mariah turns and works the lyrics: “Stop singing my part now baby,” as if it wasn’t planned for her background singer to assist her with singing her part. Get it together!!!! Mariah Carey’s known for singing in notes in octaves most singers could only wish to hit, but unfortunately her performances over the years have been less than stellar which makes me wonder if she has fallen into the “studio singer” box.
And Shame on Whitney Houston, who can easily be ranked one of the greatest singers of all time. If you were wishing for her to make a huge comeback after dropping Bobby, don’t hold your breath too long. According to reports, she was paid $3 million to perform in Tobago this past weekend, but delivered a less than stellar performance. At this point in her career, I believe it would be more shocking if her performance had been on point. She reportedly only delivered seven songs, avoiding hitting any of the high notes that she is most famous for. Houston was also diva’d out as she didn’t allow any of the press photographers that were invited to cover the event to take pictures of her. They were sent packing to the general admission area and were told they’d receive the images through Wireimage as they became available from her personal photographer. To make matters worse, she kept shouting out “I love you Trinidad” and the fans had to keep reminding her that she was in “Tobago.”
Just last week, Kanye West was blasted by fans when he shouted out Seattle in Sacramento but at least he had the decency to apologize for his mistake via his blog. Do we actually think we’d get an apology from these divas for their lackluster performances? -Necole Bitchie
