Who would have thought you'd see Madonna on Black Entertainment Television, let alone "106 and Park"? Last week the legendary singer stopped by the BET studios to "kick it" with Rocsi and Terrence while premiering her new video "4 Minutes." Now understandably, the video featuring Timbaland and Justin Timberlake can appeal to the pop and urban crowd so it was only right that Madonna make a visit to one of the most popular urban music shows on air right?
In a video<> grinded by realerthanlife, Madonna shows up to the BET studios dressed in a long black "pimp coat," knee high boots and enough gold chains to take Mr. T out of business. HellifIknow commented "madonna rocking her pimp coat for the black people huh? dumb ass rocsi probably didn't recognize the designer mind you...the audience is probably like who's this old white chick?" My sentiments exactly...
Now I do understand that Madonna is an ICON, and the moment was monumental, but am I the only one that felt as though she was making a mockery out of the urban/hip hop culture? Sitting on the couch, next to a casually dressed Terrence and Rocsi, it was evident that she may have never even turned her tube to BET. Did she expect Terrence to be decked out in baggy jeans, bling and a long white tee? (Though that's what he usually wears)
And while I'm at it, did anyone peep the audience members? BET replaced the usual young, hip-hop crowd with more diverse faces for this segment. They looked like they just took a tour bus from TRL. Some of them probably never heard of Terrence and Rocsi. I wasn't sure if I was watching BET's "106 and Park" or a commercial for Clemson University.
It's understandable that BET wants to be more diverse, replacing black hosts with Latinos, encouraging more diverse audience members and inviting celebs on like Tom Cruise and Madonna but at the end of the day, it's still BLACK Entertainment Television. Are they slowly alienating their black audience? What's next? Hannah Montana? -Necole Bitchie
