GOSSIP: YouTube Superstars

Almost a week ago, Alicia Allout posted a video of a young woman on a MARTA train disrespecting an old lady. In the clip, the girl starts screaming at the old lady while reciting lyrics from “Yah” and “Crank That” by the rapper Soulja Boy. Within a week, the video had been talked about on thousands of websites and radio stations across the net with the net pegging the girl “Soulja Girl”.

The power of the internet brought justice for the family of the unidentified old lady as an arrest warrant was issued for “Soulja Girl” shortly afterwards and she was detained by Dekalb County police on a $300 bail. Her family called into a local Atlanta radio station and stated that she spassed out because she suffers from bi-polar disorder. They wanted everyone to know that she wasn’t a bad person at all, she just forgot to take her medications. The incident was a hot topic all over the internet with SuperNovaPaperGrind commenting "WOW .. I hope that she gets or decides to follow the help she needs because she is a danger to society. The next incident or individual she verbally attacks may not care that she has a mental disorder and may take it upon themselves to diffuse the situation the way they see fit and that just might be through a violent act.".

The events surrounding the video made me look back on how the internet and blogs have made such a huge impact on today’s culture. Soulja Girl exists because someone literally taped this girl with a camera phone, uploaded the file to YouTube, fed it to a few urban blogs and it spread like wild fire within days. The negative side of it all, was this girl (as wrong as she was for spazzing out on someone’s grandma) became the laughing stock nationwide. Without that video, the cops would not have been able to identify the girl nor would she had been arrested and thrown in jail. In this day and age of Youtube and blogs, Big Brother is definitely watching us..

And, While we are on the subject of Soulja Girl, watching the video made me wonder what type of affects Soulja Boy’s songs really have on the younger generation. Although, It I was shocked when I heard that Soulja Girl was a 25 year old woman, how many other young kids are running "supermaning that hoe" and telling their teachers “Yah B*tch Yah”

To put the icing on the cake, just when I thought the whole Soulja Girl saga was over, The Crazy Girl on A Train Techno Mix,  a music track with the vocals of the young lady on the train hit my Inbox this morning. Why must I cry?

I think the crazy thing is how are people managing to catch all this footage. I feel like youtube has secret workers who carry cameras around at all times in every city.
