When Barack Obama secured the nomination to battle McCain for the presidency in November, it meant a whole lot more than just Barack Obama winning the nomination. It was historic. Just think, it's now the year 2008 and this is the first time in the history of the United States that a person who wasn't white was nominated to run for president. In addition to that, it's a non-white person who is a part of the democratic party--which was actually pro-slavery back in the days. The founding fathers must be juggling maggots in their graves right about now.

Though many would like to credit the win to hurdling over racial barriers, this is only partly true. If you look back, a great deal of Obama's pop-blocks had some sort of racial overtone. Either he was "not black enough", "too black" or the people he ran with were some sort of crazed militant bent on getting "whitey" into a choke hold. Not even Barack's wife Michelle was safe as Karl Rove championed his alleged video of her spazzing out about white people. So as much as we'd like to think that America is living up to it's mantra of race never being an issue, it's so totally and issue. It's an issue that everyone is too shook to address but would rather dance around with a soundtrack of code words and veiled meanings playing in the background.

The next few months leading to the elections will undoubtedly force this country's hand in expressing how they really feel. It's the conditions for the perfect racial s***storm. You have a young, hip, charismatic black man going up against an older, conservative, charismatic white guy. If you really think about it, you'd think they were mascots for opposing teams. If Barack Obama thought that race was a problem during the primaries, wait until he gets a load of what's coming between now and the year's end. Since racism is nothing more of an extension of fear, backing a country full of closet bigots into a corner with the thought of being the H.N.I.C. will surely bubble some interesting antics.

I think that we'll all be seeing a lot more videos of Barack doing lay-ups in the near future.
