The hot topic on everyone's lips right now is how Ludacris' pro-Obama song might have Rev. Wrighted the presidential campaign and possibly cost him the little bit of political clout he might have had. Alright, maybe Luda did let Obama's compliment go to his head but was it really that bad?
I can't front before hearing the song, I had my mind made up that Ludacris permanently stamped his membership into the idiot lyricists club but after checking it out, I had no choice but to revisit my perspective. Luda's "Obama's Here" was a rap specific nod to Obama and a diss record to the competition. It wasn't a song made to be included in a political campaign but to be served up on the web and mixtapes. This was a song created in the spirit of Hip-Hop--raw, unapologetic and brutal--I would envision this is how presidential debates would play out if the Hip-Hop community held elections. Calling Hillary the B-word and saying that McCain's only seat should be in a wheelchair is the type of insensitivity rap's battle environment is based on.
That's not to say that this was the best move Ludacris could've made in this political climate but it surely won't be the most damaging. Obama was absolutely right for distancing himself from the song. Even with the three decades that rap has been around, a great deal of people still don't "get it". It's nothing for Obama to be dubbed a rapper-lover, and not even the most liberalest of liberals would be accepting of a president who admits to a rap appreciation much less the conservative crowd Barack is trying to win over. So whatever, it is what it is, Obama gotta eat.
Let's just wait until he gets the keys to the White House. Maybe then, we could get Nas a correspondent's seat on MSNBC.
