I laughed the first time I heard that R&B
singer Faith Evans was writing a book. The only thing that
ever seemed interesting about her was the fact that she was signed as
the First Lady of Bad Boy, the biggest record company in the 90's, and that she
was married to rap legend The Notorious B.I.G.
Although I found it hilarious that she was writing a book in the first
place, I was very eager to read it so that I could hear her
perspective on her marriage to Biggie and her ideology
about the music business in general. I was expecting the book to be all
about Biggie but to my surprise, I was wrong.
The book starts out with a great epilogue. Then, there's where she starts discussing the climax of the story of her
life...like any great hood movie does. She talks about growing up in Newark, NJ, without a father and other troubles she faced when she was younger. I was
so suprised to read about how many things Faith Evans experienced. I would tell you guys those things, but I don't want to ruin
the shocking parts of the book. Of course, she also gets into her start as a singer, getting signed to Bad Boy and her relationship with Biggie.
Faith's honesty shocked me the most and made me like her book more. She doesn't come off as this goody two-shoes
looking for kudos by acting like the victim. She discusses her flaws
(being young and gullable, dropping out of college, falling in love too
quickly) and urges the readers to look at her mistakes and learn from
them. I also liked how she discussed the rumors which are centered
around her like the gold digger allegations, the Tupac-gate, and her
beef with Lil' Kim. If you're looking for her to air out other people's
dirty laundry, you better guess again, because it's not like that. She
talks about everyone who is relevant to the story--Puffy, Kim,
Charli Baltimore, and Mary J. Blige--in a tasteful manner.
This memoir overall
is a great read because it really sticks to it's theme that no matter
what you go through in life--whether it's heartache, abandonment, lost
loves--you will be okay if and only if you keep the faith. For that,
I give it 9 out of 10 stars.
