Today
of all days, I’m just not feeling it. I’m not feeling the election or
9/11 tributes or as Keith Olbermann puts it, “9/11 trademarked”, which
has taken people’s real suffering and grief and turned it into campaign slogans.
I’m
not feeling Sarah Palin, I’m not feeling John McCain and I’m not
feeling Kanye West’s dumb ass getting arrested at an airport (did you
look at the calendar, dummy?) nor am I feeling Diddy’s gas prices or
who wants to work for him.
I think everyone needs to stop it. Stop
lying, stop playing and stop acting like none of it matters. You’ve all
heard how important this election is, so if you don’t register to vote
before October 6 ( Go to www.voteforchange.org and you can do it
online) then stop complaining about how black people or Latino people
or gay people or really everyone aside from white, rich Republicans is
getting jerked.
If you spend all your time wondering who New
York is going to pick, whether Beyonce should or shouldn’t be wearing a
$5 million dollar ring (hell, she can afford it) or if T.I., Tameka
Raymond and Angelina Jolie should keep having kids, (hell, they can
afford them) and you don’t have any money in the bank, you can’t find
or keep a job, or you’re in any way dissatisfied or upset with the way
your own life is going, then don’t be mad when someone gets your job,
your man, or your paycheck.
If you have every channel on cable
on your 50-inch flat screen, could have beaten the hell out of Game and
Bow Wow in Madden with one hand tied behind your back, have both the
latest iPhone, iPod and can text message better than a lovestruck
teenager, but you dropped out of school in the 9th grade and work a
menial job while you live in your mama’s basement, then don’t be mad
when your corny homie who wasn’t as smart as you were (well, at least
in the 8th grade) is now making big dollars and owns his own condo
cause he graduated from both high school and college.
If your
idea of relationships has been shaped by reality TV, King Magazine, The
Maury Povich show, music videos, hip-hop music, street lit, or your
last jumpoff, side relationship, ex-baby mama or ex-baby daddy, then
don’t complain that you can’t ever find anyone who will be good to you
or for you.
What I’m saying is people, WAKE THE HELL UP. It’s
past time where you can sit back and make excuses and keep believing
what is spoon-fed to you by the media, the government, the internet,
your hood or your family. The politics of distraction aren’t just
impacting this election; they are impacting your life. Ask questions.
Start to read more, or at least Google things you have questions about
from reputable sites. (If the blog’s title is phonetically spelled,
that might be a clue that it’s not reputable.) If you see people who
are doing or being who or what you want to be, ask them how they did
it. If they won’t tell you, ask someone else. Go to a library. Watch a
channel that doesn’t play videos. Or turn the TV, period. Listen to
Nas’ “Untitled” and look up some of the folks he references. Get in
physical, mental, emotional and spiritual shape. In other words, stop
being ignorant. “Smart” is the new swagger and if ya don’t know, now ya
know.
